It's hard not to fall in love with Australia's tiny Fairy Wrens. At sunset, they make the most of the last rays of light as they flit among the tall grasses, feeding on insects. For me, watching and photographing them in the wild is a meditative experience. Even better, transforming the images into original artworks that can be enjoyed by fellow nature lovers feels magical.

'Nightfall in the Fairy Paddock' is part of the 2024 Velvet Calm Series, created by burning hot wax and resin onto a solid wooden substrate and then layering velvety cold wax and oil paint over the encaustic surface and carving into the layers to create texture, depth and movement.

The finished piece is prepped with picture hardware on the back. It does not need to be framed - the unique edges are an important part of the artwork.
